About Me
Hi, I'm Lumbi.
I lead hardware product development for EV, battery, and climate-tech companies. Six years across mechatronics engineering and product management — most recently taking Sub-Saharan Africa's first locally designed electric motorcycle (the Roam Air) from concept to 2,500 units in production, including a 53% COGS reduction that took the product from loss-making to break-even.
My career has wound through some demanding programmes: full NPI cycles across two electric vehicles at Roam Electric, the deployment of Africa's first Direct Air Capture pilot plant at Sirona Technologies, and now the full hardware portfolio at Kofa — batteries, swap stations, two-wheel vehicle platforms — across Kenya and Ghana. I started my career on heavy industrial infrastructure: pipelines at Kenya Pipeline Company, and HV substations at Kenya Electricity Transmission Company.
I'm at my best when the product is hard, the constraints are real, and the user's needs are unforgiving — which describes nearly everything I've shipped in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Where I’ve Worked
Senior Product Manager - Hardware @ Kofa
September 2025 - Present
Reporting to the CEO
Own the full hardware product portfolio at Kofa, including swap stations, batteries, two-wheel vehicle platforms, and docking infrastructure. Direct execution across engineering, operations, supply chain, and external supplier partners in Kenya and Ghana.
- Own New Product Introduction for the next-generation docking hub, now in design and pre-launch. Manage design release, supplier qualification, and build readiness.
- Architect the next-generation battery platform through parallel dual-sourcing across two qualified assemblers and LFP and LMFP cell chemistries, targeting a 20% unit-cost reduction (approximately $150 per battery) and a 67% cycle-life increase from 1,500 to 2,500 cycles.
- Led the phased rollout of new powertrain-controller firmware across approximately 300 commercial e-motorcycles in Ghana, delivering a 25% range increase and three use-case-tuned operating modes.
- Lead a continuous-improvement programme across the swap-station network, spanning electrical safety, structural and mechanical integrity, fire and flood safety, connectivity, maintenance operations, and feedback into next-generation hardware design.

Jidi Powertrain Controller
Led the powertrain-controller programme for Kofa's Jidi e-motorcycle platform, owning field-oriented motor control (FOC) from tuning through phased fleet deployment. Work covered dq-frame current control, field-weakening behaviour, and the full torque envelope on a mid-drive PMSM powertrain.
Defined three use-case-tuned operating modes balancing range against performance, alongside a rider-facing feature set. The rollout shipped as a complete deployment package — rider documentation, installer SOPs, change logging, and partner coordination — taking a firmware upgrade cleanly from engineering to the field.
Phased rollout completed across approximately 300 commercial e-motorcycles in Ghana.
Delivered a 25% range increase and three use-case-tuned operating modes to a live commercial fleet.

The Kore2 Battery Platform
Architected Kofa's next-generation swappable battery platform, engineered for the demands of high-cycle commercial fleet use across Kenya and Ghana. The programme spanned cell selection, pack-level electrical and thermal requirements, injection-moulded structural enclosures, and edge-hardware definition for fleet telemetry.
The design pursued parallel dual-sourcing across two qualified assemblers and both LFP and LMFP cell chemistries, de-risking supply while driving down cost. Enclosure design targeted an IP65 minimum ingress rating with an engineered elastomer sealing system, held accountable through a formal verification matrix.
Next-generation platform now in development across two vehicle and infrastructure programmes.
Targeting a 20% unit-cost reduction (~$150 per battery) and a 67% cycle-life increase, from 1,500 to 2,500 cycles.

Direct Air Capture - Commercial Plant
Following up on the successful deployment of the pilot plant in Lake Elementaita, Nakuru County, we proceeded with the design and development of the commercial plant.
The design focused on modularity allowing for the plant to be containerised and completely built in a factory versus being assembled in the field. This allows for fast and rapid deployments with very low capex.
Africa's first Direct Air Capture pilot plant. Achieved first CO₂ capture two months from project kickoff. Commercial-scale plant rated at 30,000 tonnes CO₂/year, taken from Design Verification Test (DVT) gate through Production Verification Test (PVT) to deployment-ready handover.

The Roam Move
Led the design and development of the Roam Move, an electric bus specifically engineered for urban mobility in Sub-Saharan Africa (the matatu sector). The project navigated unique design challenges including passenger capacity optimisation, robust construction for variable road conditions, and modular battery solutions suited to limited charging infrastructure.
